The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to establish an Election Review Committee in January 2025 to investigate the circumstances surrounding its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
National Chairman, Mr. Stephen Ntim, revealed this in a press briefing on Monday, December 23, stating that the committee will engage party stakeholders and the general public to identify the factors that contributed to the defeat.
According to Mr. Ntim, the committee’s findings will pave the way for necessary reforms to strengthen the party and prepare it for future challenges. “The party will in January 2025 set up an effective and objective Election Review Committee to undertake a postmortem into the outcome of the election,” he said.
The committee will examine critical areas, including the potential need for constitutional amendments and restructuring the party’s internal decision-making processes. This includes the mode of electing presidential and parliamentary candidates, as well as party executives.
Mr. Ntim expressed gratitude to party members and sympathizers for their commitment and efforts during the campaign. Despite high hopes and intensive campaigning, the party was unable to secure the victory it aimed for.
“We worked tirelessly at every level, from polling stations to the national stage. While we may not have won this battle, our belief in the ideals of a better Ghana shaped by the philosophies of the NPP remains unshaken,” he said.
Acknowledging the disappointment felt by party members and supporters, Mr. Ntim assured them that leadership shares in their pain. “These are challenging times, but we are a resilient party. We will rise again from this defeat …Together, we will get the elephant trumpeting once more,” he assured.
The Election Review Committee is expected to provide valuable insights into the party’s performance in the 2024 general elections. By engaging party stakeholders and the general public, the committee aims to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary reforms.
The NPP’s decision to establish an Election Review Committee demonstrates its commitment to self-reflection and improvement. By examining the circumstances surrounding its defeat, the party can gain a deeper understanding of its strengths and weaknesses.
As the NPP prepares for future challenges, the Election Review Committee’s findings will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s strategy. By learning from its mistakes and building on its successes, the NPP can emerge stronger and more resilient.
In the words of Mr. Ntim, “We will rise again from this defeat …Together, we will get the elephant trumpeting once more.” This sentiment reflects the NPP’s resilience and determination to overcome adversity.
As the NPP looks to the future, it is clear that the Election Review Committee will play a vital role in shaping the party’s direction.
