In a groundbreaking move, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has fulfilled his promise to introduce visa-free travel for citizens of all African nations to Ghana.
This significant step towards achieving the African Union’s vision of economic integration is expected to take effect before the end of Akufo-Addo’s term on January 6, 2025.
By joining Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin in offering visa-free entry to all African passport holders, Ghana is paving the way for enhanced collaboration between African governments and businesses.
This policy is anticipated to facilitate business, tourism, and cultural exchange across the continent, solidifying Ghana’s position as a leader in African unity and integration.
The move is particularly important given the challenges African entrepreneurs and investors face when navigating restrictive immigration policies.
As Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, highlighted, “As an investor, I have to apply for 35 different visas.” Ghana’s initiative sets a progressive example, championing the vision of a borderless Africa, first articulated by its founding leader, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
With the Ghana Immigration Service expected to announce the official start date of January 1, 2025, citizens of African nations can soon look forward to visa-free travel to Ghana, promoting economic integration and cooperation across the continent.
This development is a crucial step towards creating the world’s largest single market, encompassing 55 nations, and realizing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) vision.
