As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to take on its new role as the Minority in the 9th Parliament, a group of parliamentary committee chairmen are advocating for the retention of the party’s current leadership.
In a press conference held at the Parliament House, the MPs argued that maintaining experienced leaders, such as Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader, would be crucial in strengthening the party’s position in the House and ensuring effective representation for their constituents.
According to Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah, MP for Fanteakwa North, the party’s reduced numbers in the House make it imperative to have a strong and experienced leadership at the helm. “Our numbers have drained, and for that matter, we need a front that is experienced to face the enormity of members on the other side,” he said.
Asiamah praised Afenyo-Markin’s leadership qualities and emphasized the need for continuity in the party’s parliamentary leadership.
He noted that the current leadership has gained valuable experience from their tenure in the Majority and is well-positioned to navigate the challenges of opposition.
However, the MPs acknowledged that there would be a need to fill a vacancy left by Hon. Alex Tetteh, who will not be returning to Parliament.
Asiamah suggested that the party council may decide to fill that gap, but emphasized that the current leadership should be retained otherwise.
This call for leadership continuity underscores the internal efforts within the NPP to ensure stability and cohesion as the party adjusts to its new role in the 9th Parliament.
As the party prepares to take on the challenges of being in opposition, the decision on its leadership will be crucial in determining its effectiveness in holding the ruling party accountable.
