Bernard Ahiafor and Andrew Asiamah Amoako have been elected as the Deputy Speakers of Ghana’s 9th Parliament, marking a significant moment in the country’s legislative history.
Ahiafor, representing the Akatsi South constituency, and Asiamah, representing the Fomena constituency, were nominated by their respective parties and received widespread support from both sides of the House. Their elections reflect a strong consensus and collaboration within Parliament.
During the inaugural session of the 9th Parliament, which took place in Accra on January 7, 2025, Speaker Alban Bagbin officially declared Ahiafor as the First Deputy Speaker and Asiamah as the Second Deputy Speaker.
Ahiafor’s election as First Deputy Speaker is a recognition of his vast experience and commitment to parliamentary affairs. Having served as a Member of Parliament since 2013, he has built a reputation for his deep understanding of parliamentary procedures and his significant contributions to key committees, including the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.
As a practising lawyer, his expertise in legal matters has been widely recognized, making him a highly qualified choice for the role.
Asiamah, a seasoned lawmaker, brings extensive experience to his role as Second Deputy Speaker. Having previously served as the Second Deputy Speaker during the 8th Parliament, he is well-versed in the duties and responsibilities of the position.
His re-election to this role underscores his strong leadership and the trust placed in him by both sides of Parliament.
