President John Dramani Mahama has made a significant move, revoking the appointments of all Chief Executives for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across Ghana.
This decision, announced in a letter signed by Calistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, takes effect immediately.¹
The move is in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940). As a result, the following appointments have been revoked:
– Chief Executives: All Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies have been relieved of their duties.
– Assembly Members: Assembly Members appointed under the relevant provisions of the Act have also been revoked.
In the interim, the respective Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs will step in as acting Chief Executives until new appointments are made.
This decision comes barely a day after President Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony, marking a swift start to his administration’s efforts to reorganize the country’s local governance structure.
