President John Mahama has reassured Ghanaians that his administration is equipped to address the current energy crisis, despite warnings of a looming power shortage.
The President acknowledged that the energy sector has faced unexpected challenges, but expressed confidence in Ghana’s human resources to resolve the issues.
“There are a few surprises that have come up in respect of the energy sector… But I think that Ghana has the human resources to be able to deal with the situation and turn things around as quickly as possible,” he said.
His comments follow concerns raised by Yapei-Kusawgu MP, John Abdulai Jinapor, who cautioned that the country’s fuel stocks are critically low.
“If you look at the heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don’t have enough to last two days. So, in two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel,” Mr. Jinapor warned.
GRIDCo estimates that $89.90 million is needed to purchase liquid fuel to mitigate the impact of the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company’s (WAGP) scheduled maintenance.
The maintenance, set to last nearly a month, threatens to exacerbate the power crisis and lead to widespread power outages.
