Ghana is set to benefit from Australia’s expanding mining investments as Atlantic Lithium prepares to launch a new project, expected to create over 900 direct jobs. The Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Berenice Owen-Jones, announced this during a courtesy call on Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on January 28, 2025.
The High Commissioner emphasized Australia’s $30 billion mining footprint in West Africa, with Ghana playing a significant role. She expressed optimism about the Atlantic Lithium project, pending parliamentary approval of its mining license. “Our partnership transcends diplomacy; it’s about shared values and mutual aspirations,” she stated.
Ghana’s Vice President acknowledged Australia’s extensive expertise in the mining sector and stressed the importance of sustainable practices that align with Ghana’s environmental and community development goals. She highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering partnerships that ensure responsible resource management and local economic benefits.
The High Commissioner also announced the expansion of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) into Ghana, an initiative aimed at enhancing food security and climate resilience.
Ms Owen-Jones expressed Australia’s willingness to align with Ghana’s development priorities, including the 24-hour economy model, which Australia has successfully implemented in cities such as Sydney.
Touching on Australia’s initiative to support Ghana’s 13 agricultural research institutes, the Vice-President stated that the move would help advance mechanised farming and strengthen agricultural value chains.
