Sam George has been approved as the Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovations by a majority consensus in Parliament.
The approval came after the Minority in Parliament decided to abstain from the approval process.
Initially, the Minority had planned to demand a secret ballot, citing concerns over George’s past remarks and conduct during his vetting. However, they later opted out of the process following appeals from respected figures in the House.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin explained that the decision to abstain was influenced by calls for restraint, aiming to avoid further controversy.
In addition to George’s approval, Parliament also approved the nominations of four other ministers-designate, including Rashid Pelpuo, Kofi Adams, Joseph Nikpe, and Murtala Ibrahim. They are pending their swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama.
The newly approved ministers and their respective portfolios are:
– Rashid Pelpuo: Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment
– Kofi Adams: Minister for Sports and Recreation
– Joseph Nikpe: Minister for Transport
– Murtala Ibrahim: Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology
The approval of the ministers followed a rigorous debate and voting process on the floor of the House, reflecting the legislature’s commitment to thorough scrutiny of executive appointments.
