Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, has defended the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
This comes after the Minority raised concerns about Dr. Asiama’s qualifications and the procedural implications of his appointment.
The Minority has questioned Dr. Asiama’s credibility due to his previous involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank. They have also urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to scrutinize its dealings with Dr. Asiama to avoid potential reputational risks to Ghana.
However, Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed these concerns, citing Dr. Asiama’s extensive experience and expertise in economic and financial matters.
“He is a known economic and finance expert with significant acumen,” Ofosu stated. “He has worked as the second deputy governor of the BoG and is uniquely qualified to hold the position of governor.”
Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that President Mahama considered Dr. Asiama’s qualifications carefully before appointing him. He also expressed confidence that Dr. Asiama will excel in his new role.
The government is not concerned about the opposition’s criticisms, Ofosu said. “Stakeholders in the financial sector and the economy understand the issues at hand,” he explained.
“Serious investors will not make decisions based on unfounded concerns motivated by politicking” he added.
