Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is introducing a courier system to address the backlog of over 75,000 unclaimed passports.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced on The KeyPoints on TV3 that an immediate audit will identify applicants and ensure unclaimed passports reach their rightful owners.
“We will roll out a courier system so that applicants can receive their passports wherever they are. There must be a clear indication of who the applicants are, and if addresses are available, we will call them,” Ablakwa stated.
The Ministry is also implementing digitization and operational reforms at the passport office to enhance efficiency and reduce processing times.
Furthermore, Ablakwa hinted at a major review of the diplomatic passport issuance system to curb abuse and boost Ghana’s international reputation. He expressed concerns over the current system, stating that diplomatic passports should only be reserved for government officials and foreign service personnel.
“There has been abuse. Diplomatic passports should not just be available to anyone. We need to streamline the process to protect our national security and international image,” he stated.
Ablakwa referenced existing laws, including NLC Decree 155, which outlines eligible categories for diplomatic passports, and pledged to enforce strict compliance.
“The way we are treated at embassies and airports depends on the credibility of our passports. We must restore their respect,” he emphasized.
