In a bid to restore fiscal discipline and prevent further strain on Ghana’s fragile economy, the government has revoked all public sector appointments made after December 25, 2024.
Labour consultant Austin Gamey has thrown his weight behind the decision, describing it as a necessary measure to prevent further fiscal strain.
According to Gamey, who spoke on Eyewitness News on Thursday, February 13, 2025, the previous administration’s lack of transparency during the transition process has left the country with a hefty financial burden. “The transition period was vital, but they didn’t do the right thing,” he said.
“The former president and the new president sent their team to meet, but they were not honest enough to put on the table all the things they have as a concern—that they have employed this large number of people and that it will become part of the fiscal burden of the government.”
Gamey emphasized that the country’s financial stability is at risk due to the previous administration’s actions.
“The financial health of this country is already bleeding, and they further created more problems for the financial health of the nation,” he noted. “I think this is most unfair, and the government’s decision to revoke these appointments is a fair step towards ensuring fiscal responsibility.”
Looking ahead, Gamey stressed that only qualified individuals should be reappointed through a proper process.
“Those who genuinely merit the employment and not through partisan means can be recruited at the appropriate time,” he said.
“It’s essential to ensure that the recruitment process is transparent and fair to prevent further financial strain on the country.”
