Sports Minister Kofi Adams has assured Asante Kotoko that those responsible for the death of their supporter, Francis Frimpong Pooley, will face punishment.
Pooley, a staunch Porcupine fan, was fatally stabbed during a match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman in Nsoatre.
Seven arrests have been made, including Nsoatreman FC bankroller Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, who has been placed under a movement restriction order.
Kofi Adams made the assurance when he met with Asante Kotoko officials on Friday.
“We will not just condemn the incident [Pooley’s death] and leave it at that,” Adams told Kotoko in the meeting. “We need to [curb such incidents] and I am regularly in conversation with the IGP and taking briefs.”
Adams further assured that the Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that those responsible face punishment, regardless of their status.
“The Ministry is also monitoring the situation and whoever is found to have played a role [in the fatal incident], it does not matter the status of the person, we will see to it that punishment is given to serve as a deterrent for others.”
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has also taken action, suspending the division and meeting with Premier League clubs to discuss measures to prevent similar incidents.
Additionally, six Nsoatreman FC players have been formally charged with misconduct and unsporting behavior.
