A shooting incident at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on February 19, 2025, has sparked a probe by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), after a bystander was caught in the crossfire.
In a statement issued on February 20, the GRA explained that Customs officers intercepted a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled into Ghana from Togo. As the vehicle’s occupants fled, officers fired warning shots, but a stray bullet hit a bystander nearby.
The injured person is receiving treatment at the Sogakope Comboni Hospital. The GRA expressed sympathy for those affected and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by Customs officers in protecting national revenue and securing Ghana’s borders. The GRA has pledged to take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The authority’s investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify measures to prevent such incidents.
