The Local Government Service Workers’ Union (LGSWU) has officially distanced itself from the ongoing strike initiated by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG).
The strike, which began on Thursday, February 20, 2025, protests the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, a move CLOGSAG believes is politically motivated.
CLOGSAG’s General Secretary, Isaac Bampoe Addo, has urged the Presidency to revoke Botchway’s appointment, citing a Supreme Court ruling that prohibits civil servants from engaging in active partisan politics.
However, the LGSWU has chosen not to participate in the strike due to an ongoing legal case related to the matter. In a statement released on Friday, February 21, the union clarified its position, instructing its members to continue their duties as usual.
The union explained that after consulting with regional councils, it had unanimously decided not to join the strike action.
“For these reasons and upon further consultations by the National Management Committee with all the regional councils, the Local Government Service Workers’ Union has taken a unanimous decision not to join the strike action,” the union stated.
