President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to make public the budget for the Black Stars, emphasizing that all government expenditures on national teams must be transparent.
In his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, 2025, Mahama stressed that “there will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams.”
He also noted that funds allocated to sports, particularly football, must be properly accounted for, saying “the budget presented by the FA and other associations must be made public, as it is taxpayers’ money.”
This directive comes amid concerns over mismanagement in Ghana’s sports sector, following poor performances by national teams, including the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mahama also announced plans to revamp sports infrastructure, including refurbishing existing sports stadia and building more youth resource centers.
The Black Stars are set to play Chad in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on March 21, and Madagascar on March 24.
