President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to address the devastating impact of tidal waves on coastal communities in the Volta Region.
During a visit to Agavedzi, Mahama witnessed firsthand the destruction caused by recent flooding, which has left hundreds of residents displaced.
To mitigate the effects of future flooding, Mahama has directed the Finance Minister to allocate funds for the second phase of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project.
This initiative aims to protect vulnerable communities like Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutinu, and Adina from the ravages of tidal waves.
“We must take urgent action to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of our people,” Mahama said. “So I am going to ask the Finance Minister to include funding to start phase two of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project.”
Mahama also emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the issue. “We need to adopt a two-pronged strategy,” he explained.
“We will start building phase two of the defence wall while simultaneously resettling those whose homes have been affected. We will identify a suitable site for the resettlement project to ensure that these communities can thrive once again.”
The President’s commitment to addressing the plight of coastal communities in the Volta Region has been welcomed by local leaders, who have been advocating for urgent action to protect lives and livelihoods.
