A group of contract workers who played crucial roles in the 2024 general elections in the Greater Accra Region are at loggerheads with the Electoral Commission (EC) over unpaid compensation.
According to the workers, they were engaged by the EC in December 2024 and promised GHC600 for their services. However, despite numerous follow-ups, they are yet to receive their payment.
One of the affected workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity to Citi News on March 7, expressed deep frustration with the EC’s handling of the matter.
“I have sent texts to some of the officials, but there has been no response. They keep saying the payment will come, but it never does.”
The worker’s sentiments were echoed by others who claimed to have followed up on the payment to no avail.
“It’s unacceptable that the EC would hire us, use our services, and then refuse to pay us,” the worker fumed.
In a passionate appeal to the EC, the worker said during the interview with Citi News: “For any job, when you employ someone, you need to pay them immediately after the work is done. I’m just appealing to the EC to resolve this issue as soon as possible so that no one has to keep complaining because a lot of people are affected.”
The workers, who served as presiding officers, verification officers, name list reference officers, and ballot issuers, are urging the EC to take immediate action to address their concerns.
