In a surprise move, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed a new Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who has been leading the Ghana Police Service since 2021, has been relieved of his duties. The reasons behind his removal are not immediately clear, but sources indicate it is part of a broader restructuring effort within the service.
The change in leadership is seen as part of President Mahama’s efforts to reform the security sector. The new IGP, COP Yohuno, is expected to be sworn in on Friday, March 14.
During his tenure, Dr. Akuffo Dampare implemented several reforms, including community policing initiatives and measures to improve discipline within the service. His removal has sparked interest in the future direction of the police service under COP Yohuno’s leadership.
