The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has chastised the government for failing to fulfill its campaign promise to repeal the COVID-19 levy in the 2025 budget.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, March 15, 2025, NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah expressed disappointment over the government’s decision to retain the levy.
“This is a clear betrayal of the trust Ghanaians reposed in them,” Ahiagbah said. “The government’s failure to repeal the COVID-19 levy is a stark reminder of their inability to keep their promises.”
Ahiagbah’s comments come despite the Finance Minister’s assurance that the government will undertake VAT reforms, including the abolition of the COVID-19 levy, by the end of the year.
The NPP has vowed to hold the government accountable for its actions, with Ahiagbah urging Ghanaians to demand more from their leaders.
“The government must be transparent and honest with the people,” Ahiagbah said. “We will continue to push for accountability and ensure that the government prioritizes the needs of Ghanaians.”
