A warning has been issued to commuters in Ghana to be vigilant of unauthorized transport fare increases.
Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), cautioned that only the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have the authority to set transport fares.
The alert comes amid reports of some drivers demanding higher fares, citing rising fuel costs and other expenses. However, Imoro emphasized that commuters should not pay any increased fares unless officially announced by the GPRTU or GRTCC.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Imoro stated, “Commuters have the right to report any driver demanding unauthorized fare increases to the nearest police station. We urge the public to disregard any fare adjustments not issued by the authorized bodies.”
The GPRTU has reassured commuters that official fare adjustments will be widely publicized, and any changes will be implemented in a fair and transparent manner.
