After six long years, the Ghana Police Service has made a significant arrest in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
Daniel Owusu Koranteng, the suspect, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday and remanded into police custody until April 1.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has welcomed the arrest, praising the police for their efforts in advancing the case.
“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of Suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad, who have remained shocked by his murder,” the GJA stated.
The association, in a statement also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor.
The GJA noted that it has been in contact with senior police officials for updates on the arrest and prosecution process.
The GJA has reaffirmed its commitment to seeking justice, emphasizing that this development must be the first step in ensuring accountability for crimes against journalists in Ghana.
Suale’s murder on January 16, 2019, sent shockwaves through the journalism community in Ghana and beyond. The case has been a major test for the country’s justice system, and the GJA has been pushing for a swift and thorough investigation.
The police have been urged to continue pursuing other suspects involved in the murder.
“We didn’t qualify for the AFCON, but we still believe that the Black Stars can find its glory again,” the GJA did not say this instead they said “We urge the Police not to relent in their pursuit of other suspects involved in the murder.”
The GJA has also demanded updates on other unresolved cases of assaults against journalists, including the case of Latif Iddrisu, which it has earmarked for submission to the ECOWAS Court.
“In the coming days, we shall be engaging with the Police leadership for more details about the prosecution of the suspect and further investigations into the murder case, after which we shall update the public on our intended march to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” the GJA stated.
