Ghana’s Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has come out swinging against the Minority in Parliament, rejecting their assertions that the Attorney General has overstepped his constitutional authority.
The Minority caucus has been vocal in their criticism, accusing the Attorney General of abusing his power by ordering raids, arrests, and investigations into former government officials.
They argue that the Attorney General’s role is limited to providing legal counsel to investigative bodies and supporting the courts in administering justice.
However, Dr. Srem-Sai has dismissed these claims as baseless. Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, March 24, 2025, he emphasized that the Attorney General’s authority extends far beyond advisory duties.
“The institutional structure of the Attorney General should be able to tell anyone interested to know that the AG is the person who investigates, prosecutes, and agencies have been set up by the state and constitutional framework and given those powers to the AG,” Dr. Srem-Sai stated.
He further challenged the Minority’s understanding of the Attorney General’s role, saying, “So, anyone who thinks or wants to suggest the AG is a neutral arbiter standing somewhere observing what other people have to do will have to reconsider that position by reading the law carefully. It will be obvious to that person that the argument is not supported by any law.”
By reaffirming the Attorney General’s role in both prosecutorial and investigative functions, Dr. Srem-Sai is confident that the ongoing investigations into former government officials are being conducted within the bounds of the law.
