In a bid to uphold the principles of natural justice, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has formally requested copies of the petitions seeking her removal from office.
This move follows President John Dramani Mahama’s receipt of three petitions, which he forwarded to the Council of State for advice, as stipulated in the constitution.
In a letter to the President and the Council of State, Chief Justice Torkonoo emphasized the importance of due process, stating, “I am by this letter humbly and respectfully asking His Excellency the President and eminent members of the Council of State to forward the petitions against me to me and allow me at least seven days after receipt of the same to provide my response to you, which response can then form part of the materials that you conduct the consultation anticipated under 146(6), before the possible setting up of a Committee of Inquiry under article 146(7)”.
By seeking access to the petitions, Chief Justice Torkonoo aims to ensure that she is afforded a fair hearing, as guaranteed by the constitution. This move demonstrates her commitment to transparency and accountability, as she prepares to respond to the allegations against her.
