Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga is calling for swift action against those responsible for the disappearance of over 1,300 Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers from the Tema Port.
Ayariga’s demands come after a disturbing discovery at aluminium smelting facilities in Shai-Osudoku, where authorities found stolen ECG cables melted into blocks and processed into aluminium rods for export.
On the floor of Parliament, Ayariga emphasized the need for accountability, saying, “Mr. Speaker, this country must change. I’m happy that the minister [Energy and Green Transition] has promised to go to the root of this matter, and he has the full support of this House to hold all those who were involved in this exercise accountable, from the leadership of ECG to the leadership of the Tema Port.”
Ayariga further stressed that a thorough investigation is necessary to uncover the extent of the theft and bring all perpetrators to justice.
“And those who specifically stole the containers out of the port should also be held accountable. The companies that, over the years, have been exporting aluminium products. We need to investigate them, where have they been sourcing their aluminium products,” he asserted.
