Ghana Athletics has suspended two coaches, Wisdom Loh and Jeffrey Nkrumah, with immediate effect due to serious allegations of abuse and exploitation of athletes, including minors.
The governing body has barred them from all Ghana Athletics-related activities, both domestically and internationally, pending a full investigation.
The suspension follows allegations of violating the World Athletics Integrity Code of Conduct, specifically Article 3.3.17, which accuses Loh and Nkrumah of undermining the federation’s authority and engaging in actions that “bring disrepute” to the sport.
Ghana Athletics has emphasized its commitment to safeguarding athletes, aligning with World Athletics’ policies against exploitation and abuse. The federation has also warned athletes, coaches, and officials against collaborating with the suspended individuals during the investigation, stating that such interactions could result in sanctions, including bans from Ghana Athletics events.
“We will not tolerate actions that harm our athletes or tarnish the sport’s integrity,” said GA President Bawah Fuseini. “Our priority is protecting athletes and restoring trust in Ghanaian athletics.”
The investigation will examine whether Loh and Nkrumah’s conduct facilitated the exploitation of Ghanaian athletes locally and abroad. One case, described as bordering on criminality, has been escalated to World Athletics for further guidance.
Ghana Athletics has vowed to address systemic issues in school athletics programs, where recent reports have highlighted a troubling pattern of abuse, with some victims allegedly left traumatized or even pregnant. “Safeguarding violations breach national and international laws, as well as the human rights of athletes,” the federation stated. “We will ensure accountability.”
The suspension of the two coaches is seen as a significant step towards restoring trust in Ghanaian athletics and protecting athletes from exploitation and abuse.
