The Supreme Court will on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, hear a constitutional case challenging the process initiated to potentially remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.
The suit, filed by Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah, questions the procedure followed by President John Mahama after receiving three separate petitions seeking the Chief Justice’s removal.
Assafuah argues that the Chief Justice was not given a chance to respond to allegations before the President consulted with the Council of State, breaching Article 146(6) of the Constitution.
The case will determine the constitutional steps required for removing a sitting Chief Justice and may set a precedent for future cases involving high-profile officeholders.
