Thousands of mourners converged on the Jehovah Shammah Assemblies of God Church in Ashongman Estates, Accra, to pay their respects to Joana Deladem Yabani, a promising Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student whose life was tragically cut short.
The solemn atmosphere was filled with sorrow as family, friends, schoolmates, church members, and dignitaries gathered for the final funeral rites.
Representatives from KNUST, the Achimota Old Students Association, and various Assemblies of God branches were in attendance, alongside clergy and security officials, including the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Teye Cudjoe.
Joana was found dead near the university’s Rehabilitation and Disability Centre on February 27, 2025. Her boyfriend, Daniel Tuffour, is currently standing trial in connection with her death.
In Joana’s honor, the JDAY Foundation was launched during the service to raise awareness and combat gender-based violence and tragic relationship-related crimes. The foundation aims to ensure that Joana’s story sparks lasting change and safeguards others from similar fates.
A thanksgiving service is scheduled for April 13 at the same church to celebrate Joana’s life and legacy. Joana is survived by her parents, Dr. John B.K. Yabani and Mrs. Rejoice Amakie Yabani, and eight siblings.
