The Minority in Parliament has successfully thwarted an attempt by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to arrest Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour.
The incident occurred at Rev. Fordjour’s residence in Accra earlier today, following his allegations about two suspicious flights carrying drugs and cash that landed at the Kotoka International Airport.
According to eyewitnesses, the NIB officials arrived at Rev. Fordjour’s residence without a warrant, prompting the Minority to intervene.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the press shortly after the failed arrest attempt, condemning the NIB’s actions as an attack on parliamentary oversight.
“The caucus stood firm to protect their colleague from what they consider harassment and intimidation,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “We view this as an attempt to suppress voices that raise concerns about national security and accountability.”
Afenyo-Markin criticized the NIB’s actions, saying they lacked transparency and accountability. “No formal charges or warrants were presented during the attempted arrest, further deepening suspicions of political interference,” he added.
The Minority has demanded a full explanation from the NIB and called on the Speaker of Parliament to intervene to prevent future attempts to target MPs without due process.
Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the Minority’s commitment to defending democratic principles, urging the public to remain vigilant and support their efforts to uphold the rule of law.
“We will not be intimidated or silenced,” Afenyo-Markin emphasized. “We will continue to speak out on issues that affect the nation, and we expect the NIB to respect the rights of Members of Parliament” he said.
