The Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has appealed to the youth of Bawku to lay down their arms and support ongoing efforts to restore peace in the area.
The IGP made the call during a visit to Bawku on Friday, following a surge in violence, including the partial burning of Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga’s residence by unidentified individuals believed to be local youth.
“We want to spend at least three days in Bawku without hearing gunfire, which would signal that the youth have truly embraced our message of peace,” COP Yohunu said.
The IGP emphasized the need for collaboration between the youth and the police to achieve peace, assuring that those who cease hostilities would be given priority in special recruitment.
He acknowledged that tensions had left police hesitant to perform their duties, but expressed confidence that engaging with the youth would help find a resolution.
“Forgive us and let us know where we have gone wrong and we will correct it,” he urged the community.
COP Yohunu’s visit aims to address the longstanding chieftaincy conflict in Bawku and find a lasting solution to the violence, promoting a stable environment for investment and development.
The IGP led a team to Bawku to assess the security situation on the ground and engage directly with the youth, in a bid to bring about a peaceful resolution.
