Traders operating along the Kaneshie footbridge have been ordered to vacate the area by the end of April 2025, following a joint inspection by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), and the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly (ACMA).
The inspection, carried out on Wednesday, April 9, focused on assessing the condition of deteriorating footbridges across Accra, with particular attention on the Kaneshie Market area—one of the city’s busiest commercial zones.
Speaking after the exercise, AMA Coordinating Director, Douglas N.K. Annoful raised concerns about the structural integrity of the footbridge.
He noted that the continuous presence of traders and hawkers along the bridge was accelerating its deterioration.
He explained that although efforts had been made by the AMA to relocate the traders, there had been little compliance.
