Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to commence controlled spillage from the Weija Dam as water levels rise due to the rainy season.
In a letter dated April 7, 2025, signed by Regional Chief Manager Charles Tulashie, GWL warned that delaying the spillage could compromise the dam’s structural integrity and pose risks to lives and property downstream.
With the onset of the rains, the Weija Dam is gradually experiencing a rise in its water level, and failure to commence immediate controlled spilling may result in compromising the structural integrity of the dam,” Charles Tulashie emphasized.
The spillage will begin at a low rate to minimize downstream impact, with adjustments based on incoming water volume.
“We would like to emphasize that the spillage would continue as long as the level of water in the dam keeps rising. This is to safeguard the dam from any possible collapse,” GWL stated.
Residents downstream have been warned, and disaster management agencies are expected to assist in mitigating potential effects. GWL expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by this precautionary measure.
