Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged African countries to capitalize on the changing global trade and geopolitical landscape to drive economic growth.
Speaking at the 2025 Kwahu Business Forum held on Friday, April 19, Mahama emphasized the need for a shift from a trade-dependent mindset to one focused on industrialization and entrepreneurship.
“The world is evolving, and with it come new windows of opportunity,” Mahama said. “We must be proactive and position ourselves to take advantage of these changes.”
He noted that Africa has historically missed out on economic rewards from major global transitions, but believes current developments present a renewed opportunity for the continent.
Mahama stressed that Africa must move beyond its traditional role as a consumer and supplier of raw materials, embracing manufacturing, digital innovation, and agribusiness as key drivers of economic transformation.
“We are more than just traders. We can produce, innovate, and lead,” he declared.
Mahama believes that the current instability in global politics and economics creates space for emerging regions like Africa to assert greater influence and redefine their place in the global economy.
The Kwahu Business Forum brings together leaders in policy, business, and investment to explore pathways for economic growth and private sector development in Ghana and across Africa.
The initiative aims to promote entrepreneurship, industrialization, and economic transformation, providing a platform for African countries to shape their economic future.
