A transitional agreement between the Government of Ghana and Goldfields Ghana Limited will allow the Damang Mine to resume operations. The agreement paves the way for Ghanaian ownership in the long term.
A statement signed by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu outlined the terms of the agreement. A 12-month mining lease will be issued to Goldfields’ subsidiary, Abosso Goldfields Limited, subject to parliamentary ratification in May 2025.
The lease will enable open-pit mining operations to restart, protecting existing jobs and supporting feasibility studies to determine the mine’s future viability. Stockpile processing will continue under joint management.
Both parties have committed to working in good faith to ensure a successful transfer of a viable mine to Ghanaian ownership. Discussions on the renewal of the Tarkwa Mine lease, set to expire in 2027, will also begin.
This agreement aims to enhance Ghana’s standing as a competitive mining investment destination.
