The New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has rejected assertions that his religion or ethnicity was a factor in the party’s recent election loss.
Addressing party supporters at the NPP headquarters, Dr. Bawumia attributed such claims to “propaganda.”
Citing election data, Dr. Bawumia argued that his performance in predominantly Christian areas contradicts the notion that voters were swayed by religious considerations.
“I was the only Muslim among ten candidates in the NPP primaries, and the party still chose me,” Dr. Bawumia said.
“The election results prove that religion was not a factor. If people were voting based on religion, I wouldn’t have performed better than Christian candidates in many areas” he added.
Dr. Bawumia also commended a review report led by Prof. Mike Ocquaye, which assessed the party’s electoral performance.
He pledged that the party would implement changes, particularly in leadership selection, based on the report’s recommendations.
