The Ghana Police Service’s attempt to prohibit a planned protest against illegal mining has been unsuccessful.
An Accra High Court has struck out the motion, following a request by the Attorney General’s office to withdraw it.
The protest, set for April 28, will go ahead as scheduled, with participants marching from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Liberation Square. The event is expected to start at 4 pm on April 28 and conclude at 12 am on April 29.
The police had raised concerns about the protest’s impact on public order and essential services, but the court’s decision allows the demonstration to proceed.
Organizers of the protest have welcomed the court’s decision, saying it vindicates their right to peaceful assembly.
The protest is expected to draw attention to the issue of illegal mining and its impact on the environment and local communities.
