The Tamale Teaching Hospital has announced the resumption of emergency services after a delegation from Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama intervened in a labor dispute between hospital management and striking doctors.
The doctors had been on strike since the dismissal of the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, following a surprise visit by the Minister of Health and the MP for Tamale North.
However, after a meeting with the delegation led by Zangbalun Lana, Dr. Jacob Mahama, the doctors agreed to resume work.
“We implore you to consider the lives that hang in the balance. The cessation of emergency services has far-reaching consequences, and we fear for the well-being of those who cannot afford to wait,” Zangbalun Lana said during the meeting.
He assured the doctors that the Yaa Naa is personally looking into their grievances.
The hospital confirmed the resumption of emergency services on its Facebook page, stating, “The intervention of the King successfully got the doctors to resume emergency services.” The development brings relief to patients who depend on the hospital’s emergency services.
The strike was sparked by concerns over working conditions and the dismissal of Dr. Atiku, which followed public outrage over a patient’s death at the hospital. The hospital’s management and staff have long complained about inadequate equipment and resources, despite its status as a teaching hospital.
