The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has urged its members to closely follow the ongoing proceedings to remove the Chief Justice, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness.
Speaking at the Association’s mid-year conference, GBA President Efua Ghartey said the case is historic and requires the Bar’s attention. “One issue that many Ghanaians are talking about is what it means to have a prima facie case,” she noted.
Ms. Ghartey stressed the importance of ensuring that justice is not only done but also seen to be done, saying, “It is important that in such matters, justice must not only be done but must clearly be seen to have been done.”
The GBA, she said, will lead discussions on creating clear rules and guidelines for the removal of high office holders, including judges, under Article 71 of the Constitution. “It is time to set these rules to avoid any unfairness,” Ms. Ghartey stated.
She added that such proceedings should be conducted speedily and in open court, where possible, due to the public interest they attract. “Such proceedings should happen speedily and, if possible, in open court because of the public interest they attract,” she said.
The GBA’s proposals aim to ensure that the process is fair, transparent, and prompt.
