Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has made a fervent appeal to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to grant amnesty to prominent figures Alan Kyerematen and Paul Afoko, citing the potential benefits of unity for the party.
Addressing a gathering at the Takoradi Technical University Auditorium during the NPP’s nationwide “Thank You” tour, Kennedy Agyapong emphasized the importance of genuine reconciliation within the party.
“With reorganisation and unity, we were able to win power again,” he recalled, highlighting the party’s past successes” he said.
Mr. Agyapong urged party members to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal. “So, I am pleading with you, let us stop the public display of support for one candidate or the other,” he said, calling for an end to internal divisions.
The NPP stalwart then made a direct appeal to the party’s national executives, urging them to extend amnesty to those who have been suspended, including Alan Kyerematen and Paul Afoko. “If we want to unite again as a party, I stand before the national executives to say that they should extend amnesty to Paul Afoko, Alan Kyerematen, and anybody who have been suspended, for them to come back,” he stated.
Agyapong emphasized that granting amnesty would not only promote unity but also potentially boost the party’s electoral fortunes.
“When we are able to do that it will serve us well,” he said. “All the persons we have suspended have relatives and friends who can augment our votes as a party,” he added, highlighting the potential benefits of reconciliation.
Agyapong’s plea has sparked debate within the NPP, with some party members likely to welcome the move as a step towards unity, while others may be more cautious.
The party’s national executives will likely weigh the pros and cons of Agyapong’s proposal in the coming days.
