The government has announced plans to revoke Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, a law that grants the President authority to grant mining leases in protected forest zones.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Gold Board, the decision to scrap the law entirely has been made due to its detrimental impact.
“There were debates about whether we should amend or revoke it because some people feared that revoking it would create a gap. But many believe the law is poisonous and should be thrown out completely — and the government has listened,” Sammy Gyamfi said in an interview with Channel One TV.
Mr. Gyamfi revealed that the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Ayine, has confirmed that preparations for the revocation are complete. The law is expected to be revoked when Parliament resumes sitting.
The government is also prioritizing efforts to combat illegal small-scale mining, which Sammy Gyamfi described as a more pressing issue. “The devastation caused by illegal small-scale mining is a more urgent issue to address than matters related to the Gold Board,” he emphasized.
Sammy Gyamfi assured that the government has already initiated measures to tackle illegal mining, even before the official revocation of LI 2462.
