Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed a staggering backlog of over 70,000 uncollected passports, attributing the issue largely to applicant frustration and inefficiencies in the collection process.
In a move to address the problem, the Minister announced the launch of a nationwide passport delivery service starting tomorrow. The new initiative will allow passport applicants to receive their documents via a convenient, e-trackable courier system—regardless of where they live in Ghana’s 16 regions.
“Frustration makes many passport applicants give up,” Hon. Ablakwa said in a statement. “Our convenient e-trackable delivery via courier across all 16 regions of Ghana, which commences tomorrow, will end this nightmare. We are here to serve you,” Hon. Ablakwah wrote on Facebook.
The backlog has long been a source of concern for the Ministry, with many applicants facing long waits, repeated trips to passport offices, and unclear timelines. The new delivery system is expected to ease pressure on passport centers while ensuring greater transparency and accessibility in the application process.
