Dr. Anthony Aubynn, CEO of the Petroleum Hub Corporation, is advocating for the complete abolition of Ghana’s forest mining regulation, citing concerns that it compromises environmental protection and inadequately addresses small-scale mining issues.
In an interview on Channel One TV’s ‘Point of View’, Dr. Aubynn strongly criticized Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which empowers the Minister to issue permits for mining activities within forest reserves.
“This law makes it possible to mine in forests, and that is dangerous,” Dr. Aubynn emphasized, highlighting the potential risks associated with the current regulatory framework.
He noted that previous laws made it challenging to engage in mining activities within forests, but L.I. 2462 has overly broadened the scope, thereby threatening environmental conservation.
Dr. Aubynn urged the authorities to repeal L.I. 2462 and establish a new framework that prioritizes conservation and promotes responsible mining practices.
He believes this would help strike a better balance between economic development and environmental protection.
Regarding the pressing issue of illegal mining, or galamsey, Dr. Aubynn adopted a cautious stance, stating, “It is too early to judge the current administration’s efforts.”
However, he expressed measured optimism about the potential for positive change, indicating that he is watching the situation closely.
