Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has made a heartfelt appeal to the public to exercise patience and understanding as the country prepares to implement a significant 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs.
This adjustment, set to take effect on May 3, 2025, is part of a broader strategy to address the longstanding financial and operational challenges plaguing the energy sector.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) recently announced the tariff hike, citing its necessity in stabilizing the power supply and supporting ongoing reforms in the sector.
According to John Jinapor, this decision, though difficult, is crucial for ensuring a reliable electricity supply that can support the country’s development aspirations.
Speaking at a gathering of West African energy ministers in Accra, Jinapor emphasized the importance of public understanding and cooperation during this period.
“I want to appeal to Ghanaians and the general public to bear with us,” he urged. “These decisions are not easy, but they are needed to make sure we have reliable electricity for our country’s development” he added.
The Minister’s plea underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the sector’s challenges, even if it means temporary hardships for consumers.
