A showdown is brewing between the Ghana Mine Workers Union and the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) over plans to terminate the employment of around 50 staff members.
The PMMC’s decision is reportedly in line with a government directive to cancel appointments made after December 7, 2024. However, the union is adamant that any layoffs must adhere to labor laws.
According to Abdul Moomin Gbana, General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union, the union has cautioned the PMMC to follow the law.
“In respect of PMMC, there has been some contemplation of a kind. They have indicated to the union, what we have told them as a preliminary response is that look, the laws are available, ensure that whatever your intentions are, you do so in accordance with the law,” Gbana said.
The union leader emphasized that the union will strongly oppose any action that contravenes labor laws.
“Anything contrary to law, the Ghana Mine Workers Union will resist it. Even though these recruitments were done and the timing was clearly not the best, it is also not the reason why the current government should go down a similar route,” Gbana added.
The Ghana Mine Workers Union has initiated talks with the PMMC to address the issue and protect the rights of affected workers.
