A storm is brewing in Ghana’s Parliament after the Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman petitioned Speaker Alban Bagbin to take action against Tamale Central MP Murtala Mohammed.
The group alleges that Murtala made derogatory remarks about the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, a key figure in Ghana’s independence struggle, during parliamentary proceedings on February 4, 2025.
According to the petition, Murtala referred to Dr. J.B. Danquah as a “traitor” and a “CIA operative”, sparking outrage among the coalition and many Ghanaians. The group’s convenor, Akomaning Yeboah, described the comments as “offensive” and “disrespectful” to Dr. Danquah’s legacy.
The coalition is demanding that Murtala retract his statement and issue a formal apology on the Parliament floor.
They also want the remarks expunged from official parliamentary records, arguing that such historical misrepresentations undermine national unity and dishonor Dr. Danquah’s memory.
The petition has been received by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietror, who assured that the Speaker will take appropriate action in due course.
