In a bid to safeguard the health and privacy of lawmakers, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has renewed calls for a dedicated hospital for Members of Parliament.
Afenyo-Markin, who represents the Effutu constituency, emphasized the unique challenges faced by parliamentarians in accessing private healthcare.
He noted that the intense scrutiny surrounding the political class often forces MPs to seek medical care abroad, at great personal expense.
“Mr Speaker, there are two things that I hope for in this ninth parliament. One is a hospital for parliament. If it does happen, according to your vision, it will be a great milestone,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He further highlighted the need for confidentiality in healthcare for MPs, saying, “We are a political class and our health issues must be known within certain confines. Because of confidentiality issues, people travel abroad at great cost for medical support. I believe if we are able to deal with this, it will help.”
The Minority Leader’s proposal for a parliamentary hospital aims to address these concerns and provide lawmakers with a secure and private healthcare option.
In addition to the hospital proposal, Afenyo-Markin also advocated for the construction of a new Parliamentary chamber, citing the need for enhanced security measures for MPs.
