The government is facing mounting criticism for its failure to repeal Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, a contentious mining law that has been widely criticized by environmentalists and civil society groups.
In a Facebook post, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, lead convenor of the Democracy Hub, has accused the government of breaking its campaign promise to repeal the law.
“Since they were elected, they have backtracked on this, without so much as an honest and intelligent conversation with the people of Ghana,” he said.
The law, which regulates mining activities in forest reserves, has been accused of legitimizing mining in protected forests, leading to deforestation and environmental degradation.
Barker-Vormawor is demanding that the government provide a clear explanation for its failure to repeal LI 2462. “Treat us with respect and come clean on why we are not keeping our promises to the environment. We need answers,” he urged.
The controversy has sparked a heated debate about the government’s commitment to environmental protection and its willingness to engage with civil society on key issues.
