Two young men have died following a clash between rival gangs during a funeral at Wiamoase in the Afigya Sekyere South District of the Ashanti Region.
One of the deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Faisal Haroun from Aboaso in the Kwabre East Municipality. The identity of the second victim is yet to be confirmed.
Faisal Haroun had attended the funeral of a young lady at Wiamoase on Saturday when a violent confrontation erupted between his group and a rival gang.
Eyewitnesses say the two factions clashed at the funeral grounds, leading to the firing of gunshots and injuries to some attendees. Faisal was reportedly attacked in retaliation by the rival group and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Wiamoase SDA Hospital.
Several others who sustained injuries during the clash are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Confirming the incident, Enoch Boakye, Assembly Member for the Wiamoase-Gyidim Tanoso Electoral Area, explained, “There was a funeral in the town, and during the funeral, a fight broke out, which led to the loss of lives and injuries to others. The clash happened as the group returned from the cemetery. The fight was accompanied by gunshots, and that led to all of this.”
Faisal Haroun has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
Meanwhile, Nurain Mohammed, Assembly Member for the Aboaso-Gyamfi Wonoo Electoral Area, says community leaders are engaging the youth in Aboaso to prevent possible reprisal attacks.
“The boys went for a wake-keeping for one of their friends, and that’s where the incident happened. During the burial process, they were advised not to return there. Everything has now been handed over to the police for investigation.”
