Dr. Ken Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, has called for stricter penalties for foreign nationals caught engaging in illegal mining activities in Ghana. Instead of deportation, Dr. Ashigbey advocates for imprisonment to serve as a deterrent.
“Deporting them without punishment tells them Ghana is a safe haven for illegal activities,” Dr. Ashigbey warned on GTV’s Breakfast Show.
He believes that deporting offenders without punishment sends the wrong message, making Ghana an attractive destination for illicit activities.
Dr. Ashigbey also urged the government to declare a state of emergency in areas heavily affected by illegal mining, known as galamsey.
He cited the destruction of natural resources, endangerment of citizens’ lives, and the involvement of armed groups and foreign mercenaries in protecting illegal miners.
“This is not about the whole country — just the areas where illegal mining is out of control. We must act now to save both our present and our future,” he emphasized.
Dr. Ashigbey called on the public to continue speaking out against galamsey and urged the President to review existing policies and take decisive action to restore order and protect the country’s resources.
