The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has declared May 1, 2025, a Statutory Public Holiday to commemorate May Day, a celebration honoring the achievements of the labor movement and advocating for workers’ rights and better working conditions.
This nationwide celebration will see all relevant institutions observing the holiday.
May Day celebrations in Ghana have a rich history, dating back to 1960 when Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the country’s first President, was declared the “First Number One Worker” by the Trades Union Congress.
The Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) will mark the occasion with a grand parade, featuring trade unions and the military.
This year’s theme, “Striving for peace and stability to drive Industrialisation, Trade, and Decent Work for Social Justice,” highlights the importance of industrialization and trade in generating decent employment and promoting economic growth.
According to the GTUC, the theme emphasizes the need for peace and stability to achieve social justice and economic development.
The declaration of May 1 as a statutory public holiday underscores the significance of workers’ rights and the labor movement in Ghana’s development.
As the nation comes together to celebrate May Day, stakeholders will focus on promoting economic growth, social justice, and decent work for all.
