Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, has defended the commission against calls for the dismissal of its officials due to alleged bias.
He believes that those calling for the Chairperson’s removal do not fully understand the commission’s work since 2018.
In an interview on Joy FM’s AM show on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, Dr. Asare emphasized that the EC should be praised for its efficiency, transparency, and cost-effective oversight of elections, which has increased public trust.
Dr. Asare stated, “There are laws in this country, and since the Commission took over in 2018, there have been numerous observers, both domestic and international. The results are publicly available, and in terms of quality, Ghana is among the best in Africa when it comes to elections.”
He also noted that the EC has been transparent, cost-efficient, and has done a lot for the country, adding that anyone calling for the removal of someone at the EC “means they don’t fully understand the work that has been done”.
The EC’s re-collation of nine Parliamentary elections has been controversial, with results in constituencies like Ahafo Ano North, Techiman South, and Tema Central being re-collated and declared in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Dr. Asare explained that the illegalities that characterized the collation of results at various centers demanded that the electoral integrity be protected by ensuring that the right thing is done.
He also reminded that anyone who disagrees with the EC’s actions can seek redress through the courts, following the constitutional procedure.
